Verna Tarr Obituary

VERNA LEE TARR, 67, of Colliers, WV, passed Wednesday March 20, 2024 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. She was born December 10, 1956 in Weirton, daughter of Norma Sole Tarr and the late Henry O. Tarr.

Verna was a graduate of Brooke High School, Class of 1975 (Reunion Committee Chair 1985-2015), West Virginia Northern C.C. Weirton Campus 1978 Associate Degree in Nursing, and worked as a Registered Nurse at Weirton Medical Center, Eighth Floor. She then furthered her education at Jefferson Technical College 1990 Associate Degree in Accounting, and was a Charter Member and First President of Phi Theta Kappa. Later, she graduated with honors from Wheeling Jesuit College 1992 with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting.

Verna was a member of Follansbee United Methodist Church where she has been very active on local and district levels, as well as conference level. She was a Certified Lay Speaker and served as Northern District Lay Leader, as well as Chair of Pastor-Parish Relations, Nurture and Outreach, Financial Secretary and Church Council Secretary, and President of United Methodist Women, and Delegate to the WV Annual Conference.

Verna was very active at Hooverson Heights Primary School in Follansbee, WV. In addition to Homeroom Parent, she served as the Box Top Coordinator and Vice President of PTA.

She was a member of Fort Steuben Stamp Club, serving as President for several years; Naomi Rebekah Lodge #42 of Colliers, Past Noble Grand; Rebekah Assembly of WV, Past President; LAPM Friendly #11 Wheeling, WV, Past President, receiving Highest Honor for a Rebekah – Declaration of Chivalry for her service to others; Wheeling IOOF Lodge #9, Past Grand; Grand Lodge IOOF of WV, served as First Female Chaplain; Brooke County Federation of Democratic Women, Past President; West Virginia Federation of Democratic Women, served as District Director and State Vice President; TOPS Chapter 187 Follansbee, served as Secretary and Treasurer.

Along with her mother, Verna is survived by Lifetime Companion, Linda L. Snyder of Colliers, WV; brother, James L. Tarr of North Port, FL; Only Niece, Chelsea A. Tarr-Saunders of Follansbee, WV; Only Great Nephew, Kody O. Saunders of Follansbee, WV; Goddaughter, Lindsay M. Donohue of Charlottesville, VA; Best Friend since childhood, Denel Weeks-Holdren of Richmond, VA; and her Feline Baby, Hamilton.

Visitation will take place Sunday March 24, at 1:00 to 3:00 PM and at 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home, 380 Penco Road, Weirton, WV, where the funeral service will take place Monday at 10:00 AM with Minister Tom Derby presiding. Rebekah Service will be Sunday at 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee.
